So I was cleaning up some of my old things the other day and came across my martial arts pads, and gear. Now I've been an avid mix-match fighter of sorts since I joined the army 5 yeers ago. It first started witht he simple combatives (brazilian Ju-jitsu) that the army teaches. Then from there I went to AIT and did American boxing for 27 weeks. Once I got to my first unit I studied Soo Bak Do, and Tang Soo Do. Never really perfecting them I had orders before I learned what I wanted from my instuctor (Sa Ba Nim Sgro). As soon as I got to my new unit I deployed for 15 months. I spent that time boxing, and practicing BJJ again. Well about 8 months in an airforce Captian who was a practioner of Ninjitsu approached me for a sparring warm-up. After waking up on the floor from a punch to the forearm (I swear to this day he only punched my forearm) I became an avid pupil of his. I spent the majority of my time then studying human anatomy and practicing different forms (or stances) of Ninjitsu. And now moving on to the point of this post, Im going to get back into martial arts again after taking this year mostly off. Does anyone have any good suggestions on what style I should study, or any good dojos in the Radcliff area (as my next duty assignment is at Ft. Knox, KY)?
Of course some information for those who would decide a good style for me. I am 6'6" tall and long limbed. I weigh 240 lbs., and have very little body fat. While I am strong and can generate great power, I am not very flexible unfortunately, though I used to be and could probably build decent flexibility if i got back into it. I am a disciplined fighter and believe every style has its strengths and weaknesses and it is up to the performer to utilize the style correctly. Although I have read some manuals on it, I do not want to practice drunken boxing, not shoalin, not contemporary, not any kind of drunken boxing, as Im using martial arts to ween myself off the bottle a little. Well thx for any advice, have a good day everyone.

You could always try Cane Fu. :P

A mate of mine does Sha Do Shi (I think that's how to spell it). I'd suggest looking up martial arts on Wiki. Try one that catches your attention.

Well I think I've decided to take it a little old school. Although I never considered it a "Martial" Art perse, Kung Fu has been around for quite some time. I know you never really see it brought to mainstreem like in UFC or anything, and there are some reasons for that. One is UFC allows closed hand strikes only, and alot of kung fu moves use an open palm. Another that comes to my mind would be most kung fu masters are monks, or at the least extremely humble people, who would never step into a UFC ring because they dont fight for sport. Also on my own side I already know many moves used in UFC rings, so learning something out of one wont really hinder me. Anyone got any thoughts on me decision, or got any pointers?

Hey giant_joe.. i'm new to this scene, but a friend told me to check out your post because he thought i might give you some worthwhile feedback. I'll be the first to admit that i'm out of practice, but i've been studying sword off and on for 15 years and martial art for almost as long... I can't tell you what style or school you should study, but i can give you a few ideas.. Chinese Gung Fu has many different worthwhile styles, but as a foundation in studying any of them i would recommend Wing Chun Gung Fu... it will work as a learning foundation or compliment almost any other martial art i know of, and it's very worthwhile in itself!! I have studied some Wing Chun but never found a proper school instructor... Another school i can evaluate from personal experience is a Korean based school called Kuk Sool Won... I spent a little over 2 years studying in this school back in the states and it is very worthwhile.. the training is good and if you want to work on getting flexible this school of study would help you provided you have a good instructor.. Kuk Sool won't teach you everything, no one fighting method does, but the knowledge cultivated and kept in this school is worthwhile... i'm 5ft7in tall and while i studied at this school 3 different people taught me how to do one task.. a kick up, one of the people who taught me was a student he was about 6ft 3, so sometimes size may slightly alter a technique but still maintain it's effectiveness... sorry to ramble on.. i hope this gives you some insight into paths of learning... whatever road you take find enjoyment in it.. and remember "Even the Masters have Masters."
